Dong Hai Pagoda

Vinh Hau A, Hoa Binh, Bac Lieu, Vietnam

Founded in 1887 by Dai Huong Ca Tran Cong Muon, Hung Thien Pagoda was originally built from wood with tiled roofs and wooden walls, embodying traditional Southern Vietnamese architecture. Over more than 150 years, the pagoda has undergone several renovations and expansions, becoming a significant Buddhist center in the region.
The pagoda’s highlight is the 43-meter-tall statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, also known as Dong Hai Mother, inaugurated in 2013. The statue stands atop a 10-meter lotus pedestal, with a hexagonal base 29 meters in diameter and 52 steps leading up. The entire statue is coated in ivory white with golden trim on the robe folds, creating a solemn and serene appearance.
Every year, on the 22nd and 23rd of the third lunar month, the pagoda holds the Dong Hai Avalokitesvara Festival, attracting many Buddhists and tourists who come to pray for peace and participate in spiritual activities. Hung Thien Pagoda is not only a sacred worship place but also an appealing destination for those interested in the culture and architecture of Southern Vietnam’s Buddhism.
