Salt‑Making

Vinh Tien Hamlet, Hoa Binh District, Bac Lieu

First, on each salt field, workers compact the soil firmly to minimize seawater seepage. Then they flood the field with seawater and let it dry to further harden the surface. Once the base meets standards, seawater is pumped in.
The initial plot that receives seawater is called the “drying field”. Under the sun, water evaporates and the brine’s salinity rises. Farmers then drain this brine into the lower “crystallization field”, which has been pre‑compacted and polished to form salt.
When salt starts to crystallize, salt workers rake it into conical heaps across the field. The process repeats until the harvest is complete…
All steps from preparation to harvest are carried out under the scorching sun. As a result, salt workers invariably have shiny dark skin from sunburn.
